BOUNDARY-HISTORY OF MONROE COUNTY:
A brief history of the formation and first year
of the county as written by Allison Lendman, and
read at the 184th Birthday celebration can be found
[_H_E_R_E_]. The boundary history
is given in what follows.
Formed by statute out of Orange County, Jan. 14, 1818 (eff. Apr. 10).
Northern Boundary was diagonal Indian boundary per Fort Wayne
agreement, 1809.
Old Jackson/Orange Boundary on East.
Davies
County on the West and newly formed Lawrence County on the South.
Site
of Bloomington picked as county seat Apr. 11, 1818. Never changed since
that time.
New Northern Boundary added Indian land Dec. 31, 1821, "purchased" Treaty
of St. Marys, Ohio, Oct. 6, 1818.
New Northern Boundary on EAST-WEST line approx from where the 1809
diagonal Indian Line ran through the west fork of White River.
Land on
other side of White River was no longer in Monroe County.
Boundary extended on east border by almost one township width into
Bartholomew County - Jan. 16, 1828: genealogists - watch out for this
shifting boundary. No Brown County yet.
Tiny piece added on Northern Border by White River, Feb. 10,
1831. This was the south river bank area just across from Gosport.
Brown County formed and the Monroe County territory gained from
Bartholomew County now lost to Brown County, Apr. 1, 1836. This is often
very significant when tracing families on the border with Brown
County. The land involved was at least one township in width and three
townships in area.
End of Boundary Changes.
