These schools desks were
originally made between the years 1880 & 1905 and were used until the
1960s. At the front of each desk is the seat for next desk in the row.
Early student desks would only function when every desk faced toward
the front of the classroom. The rows of desks were often bolted to the
floor to ensure permanent proper alignment. These desks reflect the
early classroom environment of the 1800s and early 1900s (a lecture
format that did not encourage group discussion or student
communication). Obedience, repetition, and memorization were some of
the most commonly taught lessons in early classrooms.
