This large, lathe-turned bowl is made of poplar wood and often would have been used to mix bread dough. Although the wood for this bowl comes from a tree's trunk, many early bowls were made out of burls. Burls are rounded outgrowths on the trunks of trees and are still valued by artists for their unusual grain.
