This 1859 “Franklin Beauty 2”
cast iron stove would have been the only heat source for early
students attending one of the many local, one-room schools.
Manufacturers included elaborate decorative embellishments in the
original mold. This ensured a decorative product at bargain prices –
making stoves one of the most attractive items in homes and schools.
Students, as young as 6 years old, would be responsible for starting
the fire if they arrived before the school teacher. Students had many
other chores while at school, from building maintenance and
housekeeping to fetching water.
